on 8-11 april 2024, we hosted the annual conference 2024 in icc edinburgh. we’ve turned to x (formerly known as twitter) to look back at some of the highlights!

the conference took place over four days and counted 704 poster presentations, 71 invited speakers and 232 offered talks across our scientific symposia, workshops, fora, professional development sessions, prize lectures, hot topics and much more!

we were pleased to welcome over 1,600 delegates and to see how excited the whole community was for #microbio24!

some people, like david, travelled for hours and hours to get to edinburgh:

while others, like nelly, were just around the corner:

jack took some pictures of the coast:

ange and her team from northumbria uni travelled together to edinburgh:

some people, like hannah and duncan, even went for a run in the city before the conference registration started:

we had people joining us for the first time:

on-site crèche

thanks to our on-site childcare, parents were able to attend the conference while their little ones were safe and entertained:

thank you to the nipperbout staff for providing a wonderful crèche service.

exhibitors

our exhibitors were also active on social media and excited for the week ahead:

some exhibitors even brought their own games for our delegates to participate in:

prize lectures

we were delighted to host several prize lectures throughout the week, presented by eminent microbiologists maggie smith, catherine rees, david holden, daniel streicker, lucy thorne and claas kirchhelle.

the talks featured their significant scientific contribution to the field of microbiology from across the world!

scientific sessions and poster presentations

scientific sessions at #microbio24 included symposia, workshops, and presentations from both invited and offered talk speakers. the sessions provided many opportunities to showcase research from both early career and established microbiologists – and even some good crochet skills!

here are some highlights below:

social sessions

the society was delighted and thankful to our champions and early career (ec) microbiologists for hosting social events to offer informal opportunities for delegates to make new friends, forge future collaborations and have fun!
