using a train-the-trainer approach, we aim to apply the concept of forward teaching and equip professionals who are already knowledgeable in pathogen genomics data science with the skills needed to train others.

targeting specialised professionals

the ttt programme will target specialised professionals in laboratory sciences and clinical microbiology at different career stages, whose feedback will play an important role in shaping and tailoring the training resources and teaching methods.

blended learning

a mix of training delivery formats will allow for the combination of traditional conceptual lectures delivered online or virtually with face-to-face sessions of hands-on work with tutor support.

curriculum

the programme will integrate pedagogical and data science aspects for effective design, development and delivery of pathogen genomics training.

fair training materials

we plan to create course materials that are properly described, registered and made reusable by the end of our programme.

the data science and genomic pathogen surveillance training programme is implemented by the centre for genomic pathogen surveillance at the big data institute oxford in collaboration with wellcome connecting science.

the big data institute is located in the li ka shing centre for health information and discovery at the university of oxford. it is an interdisciplinary research centre that focuses on the analysis of large, complex data sets for research into the causes, consequences, prevention and treatment of disease. research is conducted in areas such as genomics, population health, infectious disease surveillance and the development of new analytic methods. the big data institute is supported by funding from the medical research council, the uk research partnership investment fund, the national institute for health research oxford biomedical research centre, and philanthropic donations from the li ka shing and robertson foundations.

the cgps​ is an interdisciplinary team, with expertise in microbial genomics, genomic epidemiology, public health, bioinformatics and web and mobile software engineering, whose main goal is to translate the analysis of pathogen spread and amr research into public health benefit.
