a probiotic for our lungs? new research poses questions about the future of treating covid-19

the results of new research into the effects of covid-19 have suggested that a mild-to-moderate covid-19 infection can lead to alterations of the upper respiratory tract (urt) microbiota, including a reduction in bacterial diversity and community structure that persists for at least several weeks after the initial infection.
researchers at vanderbilt university medical center, nashville, tennessee, usa, observed a relationship between the urt microbiota and the severity of covid symptoms in their patients. they hope this could lead to new therapy methods to reduce the effects of covid-19 in the future.

2015 uk budget commits funds to combat antimicrobial resistance

today, the uk chancellor george osborne mp announced the government’s budget for 2015. while not announced during the chancellor’s traditional speech, there was mention of antimicrobial resistance in the full budget statement, which contains information not mentioned in the speech.
the report describes how the government is to work with various organisations to create the ‘fleming fund’, aimed at building capacity in low- and middle-income countries.

animal research jeopardised by european citizens’ initiative

on monday 11 may, a public hearing in the european parliament will see organisers of the stop vivisection european citizens’ initiative (eci) call for european directive 2010/63/eu, which regulates the welfare and use of animals in research, to be repealed and replaced with legislation to end animal experimentation.
over 1.1 million people, including more than 19,000 from the uk, signed the stop vivisection eci petition, which argues for eu legislation changes to ban animal experimentation on the grounds of ethical objections and “solid scientific principles that invalidate the ‘animal model’ for predicting human response”.

early drug treatment may cure hiv in new-borns

given within hours of birth, treatment with a cocktail of widely available drugs, known as antiretroviral therapy, already used to treat hiv infection in infants, has effectively eradicated the virus in a young girl. two and a half years down the line, the virus is undetectable in the patients system. while the findings are promising, it remains to be seen if this form of treatment can provide long-lasting remission.

bacterial cause found for skin condition rosacea

rosacea is a common dermatological condition that causes reddening and inflammation of the skin mostly around the cheeks, nose and chin. in severe cases skin lesions may form and lead to disfigurement. rosacea affects around 3% of the population – usually fair-skinned females aged 30-50 and particularly those with weak immune systems. the condition is treated with a variety of antibiotics, even though there has never been a well-established bacterial cause.

manuka honey could help clear chronic wound infections and even prevent them from developing in the first place, according to a new study published in microbiology. the findings provide further evidence for the clinical use of manuka honey to treat bacterial infections in the face of growing antibiotic resistance.
